In 1855 James Russell a Falkirk lawyer and businessman opened an iron works close to Causewayend Basin to take advantage of the local raw materials and the proximity of the canal. At this time there were also railway lines to Slamannan and Bo'ness on the Forth. There were three blast furnaces and wagons were pulled between the works and the railway by a winch. The works made large profits but only survived until 1879.
