This is one of the most atmospheric places on the canal and the longest canal tunnel to be built in Scotland. Once a dark and eerie place, it now has a colourful lighting system that lights your way through 630m of solid rock and highlights the tunnel's features - candle holders, dynamite stores and shafts. Navvies carved and blasted the tunnel through this hillside because the local landowner, William Forbes of Callendar House, campaigned to Parliament against the overland route which would have ruined the view from his house.
