After being an industrial highway, the M8 of its day, the canal became a rural byway. In the 1960 and 70s construction of the M8 motorway blocked the routes of the Union Canal and the Monkland Canal. During the Millennium Link restoration project to reopen the canal, a new bridge (21A) was built under the M8 to reopen this part of the canal. The opening day was celebrated by boats from Linlithgow and Ratho meeting bow to bow.
