The line of the canal is one mark of history on our landscape. With each age and people in an area there are marks and traces left behind. Near Bridge 40 a local farmer discovered a site that had lain buried for 4000 years. He uncovered a Bronze Age cist while ploughing. The cist, made from sandstone and slate, and only 1m long, is one of the few prehistoric sites found in West Lothian. A corpse would have been laid in the foetal position, but no remains had survived. The cist was buried in alignment with Binny Crag a prominent knoll to the north.
