The Bridge Inn became a canal service station, providing a resting place with food and drink for travellers. The canal was the first motorway connecting Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Change House, which is directly across the canal from the inn, could be likened to the fuel station - where the horses for the canal boats were fed and stabled.
