Canal House was thought to have been built for the canal's engineer Hugh Baird but there is no evidence of him living there. During much of the 19th century it was the home of John Greig who was the collector of canal dues. Many of the way bills as receipts for the passage of goods along the canal were found in the attic. He was still living in the house at the grand age of 82 years!
