1975 Canal Rally (c) Linlithgow Union Canal Society

The Linlithgow Union Canal Society (LUCS) is the largest and oldest of the canal societies along the Union Canal. In 1975 sixteen local people gathered to start some action believing that there was enough local interest in improving the canal and the basin which was disused and derelict. The group purchased a 40 ft scow and work parties started to remove weeds and clear rubbish. Since then LUCS played a significant role in the campaign to reopen the canal and has transformed the basin and canal into a very popular visitor attraction.
